Electromagnetic Navigation System

Electromagnetic tracking (EMT) is a navigational technology which provides precise real-time tracking of sensors in a volume. Our proprietary DeepTrack electromagnetic tracking system provides tracking of sensors in both five degrees-of-freedom (5DOF) and six degrees-of-freedom (6DOF). Tracking sensors can be embedded within medical tools and instruments allowing them to be tracked in clinical scenarios. Electromagnetic tracking does not require line-of-sight for operation which enables effective tracking and visualisation of instruments during image-guided interventions.

Components

Quadrant Electromagnetic Navigation System consists of embedded software and hardware components. The system comprises of:

  • A Field Generator (FG) that establishes an electromagnetic field in which sensors and tools can be tracked.
  • A Base Control Unit (BCU) that controls the operation of the Electromagnetic Navigation System and executes the tracking software. The on-board computer calculates the sensor positions and orientations and send data to the user visualisation software.
  • Sensors: two types of electromagnetic sensors that may be integrated within tools and instruments. Each sensor detects the field from the Field Generator and transmits this to the Base Control Unit as an induced voltage.
